Glass Options for Table Tops
Choose the glass type that suits your table — from everyday clear float to premium ultra-clear for a frameless, invisible look.
Clear Float Glass
The standard choice for glass table tops. Clear float glass is versatile, affordable, and available from 4mm to 19mm. Suitable for dining tables, coffee tables, and desk protectors.
Ultra-Clear (Low-Iron) Glass
Eliminates the green tint of standard glass — ideal where the table base material (timber grain, stone, art) needs to show through clearly. Popular for timber-based dining tables and glass-over-marble applications.
Toughened Glass
Up to 5× stronger than standard float glass — recommended for outdoor tables, children's homes, or large unsupported spans. If toughened glass breaks, it shatters into safe pebbles rather than sharp shards.
Frosted / Matelux
A frosted satin finish — hides fingerprints and surface scratches while diffusing light softly. Popular for office desk protectors and contemporary dining tables.
Table Top Glass Thickness Guide
The right thickness depends on the size of your table and how it is supported.
| Thickness | Table Size | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 6mm | Up to ~600mm × 900mm | Small coffee tables, desk protectors, side tables — fully supported base. |
| 8mm | Up to ~900mm × 1200mm | Medium dining tables — semi-supported (e.g. glass sitting on a frame). |
| 10mm | Up to ~1000mm × 1800mm | Standard full-size dining tables, outdoor tables. Good rigidity. |
| 12mm | Up to ~1200mm × 2400mm | Large dining or boardroom tables. Premium feel, very rigid. |
| 15mm–19mm | Feature / structural pieces | Extremely heavy — used for glass-legged tables or structural glass furniture where the glass IS the base. |
For a fully supported table top (glass resting on a full-perimeter base), 6–8mm is usually sufficient. For point-supported tables (four legs only), use at least 10mm — 12mm for larger sizes. When in doubt, go thicker.
Edge Finish Options for Table Tops
The edge is highly visible on a glass table top — choosing the right finish is an important part of the look.
Flat Polish
A smooth, slightly arrised edge — safe and clean. The standard for table tops that will sit on a solid base or in a frame. Contemporary and understated.
Bevel Edge
A wider, angled chamfer cut that reflects light — classic and elegant. Popular on dining and coffee table tops where the glass edge is a visible design feature.
Mitre Edge
A sharp 45-degree angle — suits minimalist and modern furniture designs. Can be used to create seamless glass-to-glass joins for sculptural furniture pieces.
Glass Table Top FAQs
It depends on the application. For indoor dining or coffee tables in low-risk environments, standard clear float glass is acceptable. For outdoor tables, children's use, or commercial environments, toughened glass is strongly recommended as it is much stronger and safer if broken. Toughened glass is also required in any application covered by AS1288 safety glazing standards.
Yes. Select the out-of-square or custom shape option when ordering. We will contact you to confirm the exact dimensions and shape before production. Circles, ovals, D-shapes, and other curves are all possible.
Small rubber or silicone bumpers placed on the base where the glass rests are the most common solution. These also prevent scratching of the glass underside. They are widely available from hardware stores and can be positioned at the corners or perimeter of the base.
Standard clear glass has a slight green tint that's most visible when you look at the edge or at a shallow angle — on a table top, it can be noticeable if the table is lit from the side. Ultra-clear (low-iron) glass has a pure, neutral appearance with no green cast. It's especially worth it if: (a) you want the base to show through with true colour accuracy, (b) the edge of the glass is prominently visible, or (c) you're using it with white or light-coloured furniture.
